OpenBSD gaming resources

So now you know how to play games on OpenBSD and what to play. You just need some links for downloads and where to go next. This is that page.

Websites come and go quickly so please excuse any broken links. If the link is gone try searching for its new URL or using Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

Once you are done here you may want to check out the Reddit OpenBSD gaming forum or the PlayOnBSD Steam group. For possible future ports look at the GitHub OpenBSD work in progress ports. If you have the money another good OpenBSD gaming guide is the PlayOnBSD Games list.

Finding free games for game console emulation can be as simple as searching the name of the console with the word homebrew. Computer game developers rarely used the term homebrew. That word was reserved for unlicensed games on consoles. For computer games try searching shareware, freeware, and public domain. Decades ago many old games were released directly into the public domain.

Watch out for computer demos disguised as shareware. If you look for the other kind of demo - a scene demo you might also find many of those sites host full games as well.

If you have questions about hardware support check the OpenBSD manuals and OpenBSD mailing lists. Bugs should be reported to the ports maintainers and software developers. Specifics about how to run games, game engines, and emulators are in their manuals, FAQs, Wikis, and ports documentation.
